Event Details

ITVS hired Carbon Five to build OVEE on a limited budget and a tight timeline. We want to share our experience building the first version of the product -- our first node.js application -- from start to finish.

What is OVEE? OVEE is an highly interactive, multi-person video watching application designed to bring the experience of participating in community cinema online. OVEE allows groups of viewers to convene virtually and watch PBS video content. Participants simultaneously watch a video chosen by a moderator. The moderator controls playback of the video and can add video and voice commentary. Polls and other interactions can be injected into the screening to increase viewer engagement. Audience members can communicate with other viewers over real-time chat and share a visual indication of their emotional responses.

We want to share the whole story, including both technical and product design challenges.

Product Design Topics
  • Design and development process
  • Usability testing
  • Prioritizing features to match a budget
Technical Topics
  • Overview of the architecture and technical stack (node.js, express, jade, socket.io, flash, etc)
  • Using development spikes to reduce technical risk
  • Testing node.js
  • Lessons learned
We want to hear from the audience too. After our talk we'll turn it around and open the floor for those in attendance to share their relevant experience. Share your experience with node.js or give an overview of your design and development process. Let us know if you want a 5-10 minute slot.

Doors open at 6 and talk starts at 6:30. Food and drinks will be provided.

A Note about Capacity

Our office is small and we have limited capacity -- it's going to be very cozy. Please don't take a slot unless you're serious about attending. If your plans change, please let us know so that we can free up the slot for someone else. Thanks!
